Plant GuidesPlant Guides
Species-specific care guides for popular houseplants, covering water, light, soil, humidity, propagation, and common problems.
A good species guide answers two questions at once: what the plant actually is (its origin, growth habit, and quirks) and what it wants from you (light, water, humidity, soil, and feeding). Most care advice fails because it's written for a generic "houseplant" — but a monstera from a Central American rainforest understory and a snake plant from a West African dryland need opposite things.
Each guide here starts with a one-page profile — a "what you need to know in 30 seconds" block — then goes into depth on seasonal care, propagation, and the specific problems that plant is prone to. Use the search terms on the cards below to find the guide you need.

Frequently asked questions about plant guides
Which houseplant is hardest to kill?+
Snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata) tolerates the widest range of neglect: low light, irregular watering, and dry indoor air. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) and ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) are similarly forgiving and good first plants.
What's the easiest plant for a low-light apartment?+
ZZ plant, snake plant, and pothos all survive in 50–200 lux (the lower end of "indoor bright"). They won't grow fast in dim corners, but they won't decline either.
How big do indoor plants get?+
Most common houseplants reach 1–2 m indoors over several years — limited by pot size, light, and humidity. Monstera deliciosa, fiddle leaf fig, and bird of paradise can exceed 2.5 m in bright rooms. Small species (peperomia, pilea, most ferns) stay under 40 cm.
How often should I fertilise houseplants?+
Monthly during active growth (roughly March to October) at half the strength listed on the bottle. Skip feeding in winter. Over-fertilising is more common than under-fertilising and shows up as crispy leaf tips and white crust on the soil.
