Troubleshooting

Step-by-step diagnostic guides that help you identify what's wrong with your plant and exactly what to do next, written for quick scanning.

Plants don't fail suddenly — they tell you through color, texture, and posture what's wrong, usually days or weeks before the damage is serious. The challenge is that the same symptom can have several causes: yellow leaves can mean overwatering, underwatering, nutrient deficiency, or simply old age, and the fix for each is different.

Every guide in this topic walks the same diagnostic flow: symptom description, most-to-least likely causes, a short list of tests to narrow it down, and the specific action for each cause. If you're not sure where to start, begin with the symptom that's most visually obvious and work downward from there.

Frequently asked questions about troubleshooting

What's the most common cause of yellow leaves on houseplants?+

Overwatering, by a wide margin. When roots sit in saturated soil, they can't take up oxygen or nutrients, and lower leaves yellow and drop first. Check soil moisture 5–8 cm down — if it's still wet several days after watering, the root zone is the problem.

How do I tell overwatering from underwatering?+

Both cause wilting, which is confusing. Underwatered leaves are thin, crispy, and curl inward; the pot feels light and soil is bone dry. Overwatered leaves are soft, yellowing, and limp; the pot feels heavy and soil is still damp. When in doubt, check the roots — black and mushy means rot, white and firm means thirst.

Can a plant recover from root rot?+

Often, yes, if caught early. Remove the plant from its pot, cut away all black, mushy roots with sterilised scissors, rinse the remaining white roots, and repot into fresh, well-draining mix in a pot one size smaller. Water sparingly until new growth appears.

Should I mist my houseplants?+

For most houseplants, misting doesn't meaningfully change humidity — the effect lasts minutes. For humidity-loving species (calathea, ferns, anthurium) a humidifier or pebble tray is far more effective. Misting is more useful for discouraging spider mites than for hydration.
